Blood tests at Avante Pharmacy
Blood tests are essential to preserving and maintaining good health in the UK. The NHS recommends that adults undergo regular blood tests to check for signs of any underlying health conditions, such as diabetes or high cholesterol. Conducting these tests can help detect any potential problems before they become serious illnesses.
Avante Pharmacy offers a variety of different blood tests. These range from simple tests, such as a full blood count (FBC), which helps to measure the overall number of red cells, white cells and platelets in your body, to more complex testing, which provide a full body check-up and screening for potential underlying diseases or conditions.
An additional £30 draw fee is charged on top of the listed blood test prices.
Analysing your results
We provide a full analysis of your results detailing the reference ranges for each biomarker against your actual results, making it easy to interpret. It is important to note that blood tests alone are not a substitute for seeing a doctor, particularly if you feel unwell. You should not make a diagnosis or start any treatment without a consultation with a doctor or a suitably trained healthcare professional. There are many times when test results that are out of range are entirely insignificant, but other times when they are not. They always need to be interpreted in the context of the rest of your health, and this can only be determined with a full clinical history and examination.
Types of blood tests
The most common type of blood test is known as a ‘Venous Blood Test’, whereby a sample of your blood will be taken from a vein in your arm – usually using a needle and syringe. This type of test requires little preparation and is generally painless. Other blood tests may include an arterial puncture, whereby an artery in your wrist or ankle is punctured to take a sample or capillary punctures, where tiny drops of your blood are taken from the skin with lancets or needles.
Before having any clinical examination, you must ensure that you have been appropriately assessed by your GP first; this will help ensure that only necessary investigations are carried out.
Getting the most out of a blood test
For any test results to be accurate, you must not consume alcohol for at least 24 hours before your appointment, as this can alter some blood levels, interfering with results and giving inaccurate readings. Furthermore, fasting for 12 hours before taking certain types of blood tests can also improve accuracy. Again, this should be discussed with your doctor beforehand, who will advise on exactly what preparation is needed, depending on the type of test you’re having done.
Overall, undergoing regular blood tests at least once a year (or as recommended by your doctor) is essential for maintaining good health and detecting any potentially dangerous medical conditions early on – so make sure to arrange yours today!

This test checks whether you have immunity to the Varicella Zoster virus, the virus responsible for chickenpox and shingles.
By detecting IgG antibodies in your blood, it can confirm whether you are protected as a result of a past infection or vaccination.
Knowing your immunity status is particularly important if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, work in healthcare, or are in regular contact with vulnerable individuals.

This test can indicate your risk of developing cardiovascular problems. High cholesterol levels can cause your arteries to become blocked – leading to coronary heart disease, heart attack or stroke.
Finding out about high cholesterol levels can help you make the positive lifestyle and dietary changes needed to improve your chances of a long and healthy life.

A high HbA1c is used to diagnose diabetes. It is beneficial because it indicates how often you have had abnormally high blood glucose levels over the previous three months – rather than a glucose test showing your level at a single point in time.
It is a potentially life-saving test, and it is common for people to have diabetes and not know about it. Unmanaged or undiagnosed diabetes is one of the leading causes of mortality.

A Full Blood Count (FBC) provides information about the different cells in the blood, these include the red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets.
Red blood cells contain haemoglobin which carries oxygen to the various tissues in the body. In contrast, white blood cells control the immune system and protect the body from foreign invaders like bacteria and viruses. FBC testing is a screening test for various disorders like anaemia and infections.

A hepatitis B IgG immunity blood test indicates whether a person is protected against the hepatitis B virus. The test is normally carried out after receiving a course of hepatitis B vaccines.

The hepatitis B virus produces hepatitis B Surface Antigen (HBsAg). The virus causes liver infection and is spread from contact with an infected person’s blood and bodily fluids. HBsAg tests are used to diagnose if a person is currently infectious.

The immune system produces HIV 1&2 antibodies after exposure to HIV. HIV 1&2 antibodies tests are used to measure the presence of antibodies produced in response to HIV.
Levels of the viral p24 protein are present in the blood serum of newly infected individuals during the short period between infection and seroconversion, making p24 antigen assays useful in diagnosing primary HIV infection. For accurate results, this test must be done 3-4 weeks after possible exposure.
After your appointment, we will send your blood sample to our partner lab on the same day. The lab will analyse the sample, and results will be sent to you via email within 5 to 7 working days from your appointment date.

This test checks your level of the hormone Testosterone, the primary sex hormone in males. The high levels of testosterone that men have compared to women are responsible for the development of virtually all the physical differences between the sexes.
In adult males, it controls sex drive, maintains muscle mass and helps make sperm. Understanding your testosterone level may help if you are experiencing low sex drive, infertility, erectile dysfunction and more. Testosterone levels should also be checked regularly by anyone using testosterone supplements.
