Cholera Vaccine in Edinburgh
Cholera is an acute diarrhoeal illness caused by the gram-negative bacterium Vibrio cholerae. Once the small bowel is colonized, the bacteria releases an enterotoxin, triggering the secretion of fluid and electrolytes, which could lead to painless, watery diarrhoea.
Cholera can be mild or appear without symptoms in healthy individuals. Symptoms include sudden, profuse, watery diarrhea with associated nausea and vomiting. If left untreated, cholera can swiftly progress to severe dehydration and shock, with around 50% fatality rate in cases with serious complications. However, with prompt and effective treatment, the risk of death is reduced to less than 1%.
