Meningitis ACWY vaccination

Meningitis ACWY Vaccine in Edinburgh

Meningitis ACWY, a form of bacterial meningitis, can be transmitted through close contact with an infected person or animal. While prevalent among individuals aged 15-24, it can affect people of any age. Symptoms are similar to those of flu and may include fever, headache, stiff neck, nausea, confusion, and drowsiness. In severe cases, meningococcal septicaemia may manifest as a skin rash.
The Meningitis ACWY vaccine provides protection against four bacterial strains causing meningitis and septicaemia: Neisseria meningitidis groups A, C, W, and Y. Administered as a single injection, the vaccine contains small amounts of these four strains.

How Meningitis ACWY Spreads

Transmission of meningitis-causing bacteria occurs through respiratory droplets or throat secretions from carriers. Close, prolonged contact, such as kissing, sneezing, coughing, or living with a carrier, facilitates spread.
N. meningitidis transmission is heightened during mass gatherings, like pilgrimages and jamborees. While most infections are asymptomatic, carriers, especially older teenagers, may unknowingly harbor the bacteria, potentially acting as a reservoir for transmission to others.
